First place in NAGA (North American Grapplers Association) competition in 2008. Blue Belt Heavyweight division. I won a faux-Samurai Sword as my trophy.

I was inspired to write this Haiku after reading  The Book of Five Rings (五輪書 Go Rin No Sho) again. It was written by renown philosopher and warrior, Miyamoto Musashi.  I do not study Niten Ichi-ryū, the system of using two blades in combat simultaneously, that he founded.  However I do read his book at least once every year to keep myself abreast and aware of how to deal with the fundamental principles of conflict that are present in my everyday life. The ideas he wrote about consistently illustrate, and show me possible solutions to many of my life’s problems.

His book is one of my most treasured possessions. I routinely buy a copy, read it, then give it to a someone new to my Team, or a friend.  I never want to give the book away because of how much I enjoy reading it and underlining the points that I am working on, but by doing so I can strengthen my resolve to never become attached to things.

Becoming attached is a phobia of mine,

I studied Judo for a solid year while I was in college, It’s a beautiful art. I won’t claim to be a Judoka, I was able to fine-tune my “gripping.” Well, that and learning how to fall safely. I was thrown hard and often!
