When Malcolm Gladwell penned The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference, he codified, mapped out, and helped me to refine a key position that I and other successful men always held and/or have on our team.
This is how to become the beating heart in a complex system of people & relationships!
Gladwell names people like us “Connectors”.
“What makes someone a Connector? The first — and most obvious — criterion is that Connectors know lots of people. they are the kinds of people who know everyone. All of us know someone like this. But I don’t think that we spend a lot of time thinking about the importance of these kinds of people. I’m not even sure that most of us really believe that the kind of person who knows everyone really knows everyone.”

I have friends that travel the world to cast a wide net and I have friends that entrench themselves into a specific community to, for a targeted sphere of influence. Whenever one of my friends or business partners mention that they are looking for anything inside the realm of my considerable cadre of connections I make an overt and deliberate effort to broker a meeting. I prefer for us all to meet in person, but it’s often online.
I don’t hand out phone numbers, I create a private group on whatever form of social media we all have in common and add them both.
Then I proceed to tell them who the other person is, what they are to me, and why they should meet. I highlight all the best personal qualities they both have shown me and emphasize that while I can not guarantee that they will do business together or become friends, I can guarantee that they are both people I respect and know are reputable or noteworthy in their profession as well as personally impressive.
This makes it personal and more valuable!
Here are a few personal introductions I have made online, with the names changed to respect everyone’s privacy. There are no exaggerations here, this is how I bring people together!
Opera is a dear client who reached out to me as a means to facilitate a meeting with someone who is outside his professional and personal peer group. This was a very special situation.
“Opera, I want to introduce you to my friend and client Constellation, he is an executive tasked with discretion as a priority when meeting the needs of private clients in Sao Paulo, Brazil. With complete security, I can say that he is professional, dedicated, and nondescript. He won’t discuss your needs with anyone but you and I know that he can help you to focus on your next move.
Constellation, Opera is an educated businessman and family man, he has a solid set of referrers as well as nominators who will also vouch for him and I believe that you are unique in your qualifications to help him look at his options for the future!
I’m proud to be able to broker a meeting between you two. Due to the sensitivity of this issue, I am recusing myself from your first meeting and I ask to remain uninformed of any business you two do together.”
Here is a situation that involved a Brazilian friend traveling to Hawai’i, USA! I opened a group chat, added both of them, and wrote this introduction.
“Good morning my friends!
Woodhook, I need to introduce you to my dear friend Barba. he’s one of the most genuine friends I have and has made my time here in Sao Paulo, Brazil an amazing experience!
Barba, Woodhook is a friend of immense wisdom and experience! Not just for practical knowledge of the city, but the wisdom gained from a life of diverse experiences there.
I want you all to connect here online, and then again in Hawai’i, I want you to have at least one coffee together and exchange hugs for me. You both have a brilliant outlook on life that has brought you the success that I am glad to be a part of.
Thank you both!”
This is a professional introduction between one of my most respected clients and a young man that I have helped to develop as a professional.

I was asked to take a contract that I am capable of doing, but I chose not to because I didn’t want to overburden myself and not be able to service all my clients with the same exacting levels of professionalism they deserve and are accustomed to from me.
“Hello Terra, and the answer is “NO!”
I can say that with a smile on my face because I want you to know that while my team could accept your contract and complete the task you need to be done, I would not be able to give it the time and attention to executing it with the level of detail that my clients deserve. I would rather reject it and ask you to contact me for the next contract so that I can give you the performance that you have come to know me for.
However, I want to give you to someone as proficient as I am.
My dear friend and contemporary Pommy is as qualified as I am. I am willing to put my reputation on her ability.
Pommy is someone as capable of processing a contract with the level of skill you have come to enjoy from me. Not because there are a lot of people who can, but because there are so few that those of us who are on a level sufficient to your needs all travel in the same company. I lose nothing by giving you another professional to work with and her a client that has integrity.”
Putting quality people in touch with each other isn’t just a way to Pay It Forward in life, it separates me from the crowd.
It allows the people in my circle to enthusiastically introduce me to the best of their friends and professional contacts!
